IN Latest SUSA Poll: Clinton Up 12; Time To Work

Mon May 05, 2008 at 10:26:39 AM PDT

There's a bit of bad news for Barack Obama in SurveyUSA's final pre-election poll in Indiana. According to the results of surveys conducted by the organization from  May 2nd to May 4th, Hillary Clinton has gained ground - she leads among conservative, moderate, and liberal Democrats, and she's up 27 in southern Indiana. The only places where Obama currently holds leads are among voters age 18-34 and the greater Indianapolis area.

The raw numbers, you ask? Here goes:

Clinton 54
Obama 42

Hillary has improved her standing. It doesn't look good - but there are things that you (yes, you) can do to make the election day numbers look different from SUSA's last poll.

Hillary Clinton Feels Your Pain

Fri Apr 04, 2008 at 03:16:21 PM PDT

I generally hate advertisements. They're annoying, loud, banal and repetitive. Nevertheless, given the news found within the Clintons' tax returns, I think it's time for a parody:

Speaking fees for Bill Clinton? $51,855,599
Book income for Hillary Clinton? $10,457,083
Pretending to care about the plight of the poor so you can win the Presidency? Priceless.

I find it ironic that Hillary Clinton, who has only recently re-invented herself as a populist, filed a joint return with IRS of 109 million dollars. But she cares about you, don't you know? If NAFTA and Welfare Reform, two controversial (and rightly so) laws that Clinton was for before she was against didn't help you, it must be your fault. You're just not working hard enough. And that union thingy you're in? Don't worry - Mark Penn's on your side! Hillary promises!

Tue Apr 01, 2008 at 01:53:15 PM PDT

Hello, fellow Kossacks. I won't waste much of your time with an introduction today. I have to get to the point: Barack Obama is in trouble, and he needs our help. There's a very serious issue that needs to be addressed right away; this morning, the New York Times discovered an audio clip that could potentially end Obama's candidacy for the Presidency. This audio clip, which is currently making the rounds on the Internet, must be stopped. More below the fold...

Harold Ickes is an Idiot; Clinton is done

Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 02:44:16 PM PDT

The race for the Democratic nomination is over, and Hillary Clinton has lost. The fat lady has approached the mic.  The Obama lead is insurmountable. There is absolutely no legitimate way for Hillary Clinton to win, besides the "Tonya Harding" option, or, in other words, "The Big Red Button That Will Destroy the Democratic Party." But her advisors and the candidate herself are suffering from the grandest of delusions.

They think that Hillary can actually win.

The Clintons and Betrayal

Wed Mar 26, 2008 at 12:37:47 PM PDT

This diary was meant to be a continuation of the diary I posted last night.

It is always with the best intentions that the worst work is done.

Oscar Wilde

It has come to this. After a grueling and frenetic 1992 election campaign, Bill Clinton assumed the presidency with a popular mandate to change Washington. He would work to eliminate corruption. He would fight for cheaper health care, better labor standards, and better jobs.

And he would build a new Democratic coalition that would re-establish the progressive movement in America. The stage was set; the eyes of the nation focused. But it all came crashing down. Alas, Clinton's presidency did not deliver on most of these promises. This is a cautionary tale - of both where we've come from, and where we could end up.

Have You No Sense of Decency, Hillary?

Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 08:26:56 PM PDT

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton,

At one time, I thought you would be the first woman to lead our country. I was convinced by your intelligence, candor and reputation as a person who stand up for principle despite the strongest of opposition. You have always been America's "iron lady," yet you have shown the compassion and empathy that Margaret Thatcher sorely lacked. But you are no longer the human being you once were. Throughout the course of this primary election, your behavior has been reprehensible. Several people have implored you to stop your destructive quest for the Presidency, to no avail. When the dust settles and this campaign ends, no matter the outcome, your reputation and good name have been irrevocably damaged. You are a role model no more. It didn't have to be like this. But you have made a choice, and you are not backing down. It is with both great anger and regret that I address this missive to you.

Senator Clinton, you have been corrupted by your lust for power.

Pennsylvania and Barack Obama

Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 01:11:18 PM PDT

It's going to the Keystone state.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is one of the nation's most interesting places and a critical piece of the Democratic electoral coalition. In this election cycle, it will also play part in the Democratic primary, where voters on April 22nd will have their say on who they think should be the next President of the United States.

From what we've heard, this state is Clinton territory. But the reality is much more nuanced. I'm here to show you why - and how- Barack Obama can win in Penn (and put Hillary Clinton away for good).

Ohio: Obama poll-watchers locked out by state officials

Tue Mar 04, 2008 at 01:39:05 PM PDT

This is a developing story, but it looks like the machine strikes again:

Al Giordano at The Field and Ben Smith at Politico are reporting that poll-observers with the Obama campaign have been barred from observing the election results by an official in the Ohio Secretary of State:

The state's rules require a formal certification process for poll monitors. The Obama campaign, however, has distributed a letter signed by its state director, Paul Tewes, which states that the letter's bearer is "hereby authorized to serve as a legal poll monitor."

Deutsche Bank: $150 Oil Within Two Years

Thu Feb 28, 2008 at 01:01:37 PM PDT

Oil is essential to our economy, ingenuity, transportation and development as a nation. We are addicts, held hostage to the vagaries of global supply and internal demand. Try as we may, oil has us - and we can't stop shooting up. Unfortunately, our addiction to this rare and expensive drug will only grow worse if the status quo is maintained. We are nearing the end of the oil era - and we must swiftly and adroitly deal with the consequences. After perusing the following post at the Wall Street Journal, I am more convinced than ever that the United States must find the proverbial Methadone to ease our withdrawal symptoms:

Deutsche Bank’s oil team is jumping into the swirling peak-oil debate, arguing that steep decline rates in existing oil fields will make it all but impossible for producers to break beyond a 100 million-barrel-a-day ceiling.

Not a serious problem, you think? Think again.

Obama wins Virgin Islands w/ 90% of the Vote

Sat Feb 09, 2008 at 07:09:40 PM PDT

Wow - this is a huge victory. And even though the Virgin Islands are small, they still offer valuable delegates. Obama has taken these delegates in a resounding fashion - with over 9/10 of the total vote in the caucuses!

The Whouley Effect

Mon Jan 07, 2008 at 09:04:10 PM PDT

Why New Hampshire May Be Closer Than You Think

I am a supporter of Barack Obama, but I was taken by surprise when the Clinton campaign revealed the news that Michael Whouley is working behind the scenes on Hillary's New Hampshire operation.

You may have heard that Whouley is a good strategist. You heard wrong. He is an absolutely brilliant strategist and is rightly feared by rival campaigns.

I'm here to explain why his reputation is deserved, and what the Obama campaign should do to counter his efforts today.

Hillary Clinton is Not Electable

Fri Nov 09, 2007 at 07:46:08 PM PDT

There. I said it. As the media continues to magnify the strength of the Clinton campaign and Mark Penn touts the latest national polls, I can't help but believe many Democrats are fooling themselves about Hillary. And yet, when they have been asked the question in the past, a majority of Democratic voters believe that she is the most electable candidate. Today, I'm going to demonstrate why she's not. And, in contrast to many of her supporters, I will back up my claims about her electability with solid evidence. I realize that any attempt to portray Hillary Clinton's chances at the presidency in a negative light will incite controversy. However, it's time for Democrats to step up to the plate and take a critical, in-depth look at Hillary's real chances of winning the White House.

Grandpa Fred's Drug Dealer

Sun Nov 04, 2007 at 12:47:23 AM PDT

Fred Thompson has a drug dealer running his campaign. No, really - I'm serious.

According to an article in today's Washington Post, Philip Martin, an influential Republican businessman and co-chairman of the Thompson campaign, has a criminal record for drug dealing:

Republican presidential candidate Fred D. Thompson has been crisscrossing the country since early this summer on a private jet lent to him by a businessman and close adviser who has a criminal record for drug dealing.

And these drugs weren't your regular Rush Limbaugh painkillers, folks...

Reflections of a Youth Voter

Sat Nov 03, 2007 at 11:39:31 AM PDT

I've always been interested in politics. And although I have lived my entire life in one of the nation's 'reddest' states, I've never hesitated to openly and actively support the Democratic party. I first logged on to Daily Kos when I was a sophomore in high school. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Through Daily Kos, I've been able to focus my attention on progressive candidates, ideas, and causes. During the 2004 election cycle, I was very active. I interned for Tom Daschle, volunteered for Stephanie Herseth, and gave what little money I had to John Kerry. But then, something changed. I quit.

AK-47s in US Possession Reported Missing

Wed May 10, 2006 at 03:18:26 PM PDT

Update: Amnesty has a more in-depth article dealing with international arms shipments (that certainly illuminates the current discussion). Its conclusions are, to say the least, shocking.

Over 200,000 AK-47 assault rifles may be in the hands of insurgent groups and terrorists in Iraq due to a bungled or corrupt transfer of the weapons from US to Iraqi control.

The Daily Mirror, a British tabloid, published a story yesterday regarding the transfer of a huge store of the weapons from Bosnia to Iraq. The job was farmed out to contractors, who subsequently took the weapons and "disappeared" them.

If this initial report is confirmed, it could be an ominous sign for the US occupation of Iraq.
