This Weekend, Play Some Games, Exercise Your Mind

Sun May 04, 2008 at 03:05:07 PM PDT

One of my PBS stations is fundraising with an infomercial about brain plasticity and "brain exercise" software, and there was a story in yesterday's New York Times, Exercise Your Brain, or Else You’ll ... Uh ...   Do these programs really work, or are they just another fad drummed up to sell more panaceas that will go unused after a few tries?

I run a member-supported casual game community. The median age of my members is around 68, and the oldest whose age I know is 96. I was dragged by circumstances into doing this, but I've learned wonderful things about the value of play for the ageing mind. I'll tell you more below the fold, but first I want to let you know ...

What Internet Discrimination Can Look Like (with Pix)

Mon Jun 05, 2006 at 09:28:35 AM PDT

With no major problems of Internet discrimination yet, the government should stay out, he [Mike McCurry] said.

We've heard about AOL blocking email for an origanization that was opposing them, and Telus blocking access to its' opponents' website during a union fight. But a picture is worth a thousand words, and anecdotal stories.

So follow me below the fold, and SEE a situation where a big Internet provider figured that it could act as the gatekeeper to its customers ... by offering their advertising partners the opportunity to place their advertising right on top of their competitors' (non-advertisers') web pages.

Gov't Rushes to Defend AT&T on NSA Case

Sat May 13, 2006 at 09:46:30 AM PDT

They're wasting no time trying to quash this. As you may know, the EFF has filed suit against AT&T for allowing the NSA to wiretap its customers and those going through its switches without a warrant.  Now, Reuters is reporting...

The U.S. government filed a motion on Saturday to intervene and seek dismissal of a lawsuit by a civil liberties group against AT&T Inc. over a federal program to monitor U.S. communications.

And of course, there's more....

God spake these words and said...

"I am so pissed at these damned 'Christians'!"

And that was just the beginning ... more is below the fold.

Why FEMA turned away help

Mon Sep 05, 2005 at 07:55:38 AM PDT

For days after the disaster, help and volunteers of all sorts headed for New Orleans with relief supplies and expertise, only to be stopped and turned away by FEMA.

Last night, one of my friends joined our regular Sunday chat. He had just come home from New Orleans with his group of volunteer firefighters from Houston, after they had waited outside New Orleans for since Tuesday for FEMA to let them help in New Orleans, or use them somewhere else in the stricken region.

FEMA's "reason" -- they wouldn't let anyone in "until the National Guard has secured the city." The details of his experience are below the fold.

Ask the nation: NOW how secure do you feel?

Fri Sep 02, 2005 at 12:57:14 PM PDT

Kossacks get it. The MSM gets it. Even intellectually honest conservatives get it. But much of America is still just stunned, distracted by the "blame the victims" or "this is not the time for politics" memes, or reacting with "rally 'round the leaders" that is the immediate aftermath of every major disaster.

Here is question we should be asking the nation. How confident do you feel now in the government's preparations to protect you and your family from a national security disaster?
