The Warrior Fund: Money, meet mouth

Wed Oct 11, 2006 at 10:44:27 PM PDT

I know that everyone has been giving 'til it hurts this election season and it's showing. I hate to do this, but I'm going to ask you to give a little more.

I want everyone to donate a few dollars to The Warrior Fund.

Yes, it's a fund run by people who seem to believe that all atrocities committed in Iraq and Afghanistan are part of a terrorist propaganda campaign, but I'm going to ask you to overlook that. This money goes to defending American service members. We, as liberals, believe in due process for all--and that means soldiers, accused terrorists and even (soonohpleaseohpleaseohplease) Republican presidents.

So I'm asking you to help provide an adequate defense for our accused service members. I'll be the first to say they should have the book thrown at them if proven guilty, but, until then, I don't want anyone to have to defend himself against this government alone.

In fact, if we make it clear that we are liberals, and against the Iraq war and against Bush but still believe in the cause of soldiers being innocent until proven guilty, we could help de-polarize this whole contraption.

It will have to be after the election, but I'll contribute.

It rubs the loofah on its skin or else it gets the falafel again.

Is there any way you (or someone) could arrange a way we could contribute as a group?

Perhaps contact them and have them open a separate liberal pipeline?

Tough to firm up what I'm talking about but they could even turn it into a competition of sorts.

Not to nitpick, but why are so many "words" on their "site" in "quotes"? As for their mission statement, I have a some doubts.

    1.  Full Military Honors: To provide America’s Military Veterans full Military Honors at the time of their passing,

Last I heard, the military already insures this. Any veteran who is honorably discharged, in addition to active duty, Guard, and reserves, all get full military honors. So why does this group think it needs  to provide this?

    1.  Armed Forces Legal Defense Fund ("WARRIOR FUND"): To provide a legal and transparent mechanism for the American public to make donations that will be applied exclusively to the legal defense of any member of our Armed Forces alleged or charged with any action they may have allegedly been engaged in during combat operations.  "They fight to defend us...now it is our turn to defend them"  NOTE: This is a recently added MISSION for United American Patriots and thus, it will take some time to get our posted By Laws edited and uploaded to reflect this MISSION which has been unanimously approved by the Board of Directors of United American Patriots.(Effective: June 20, 2006)

So they have a staff of retired military lawyers ready to go? Even though the military does provide any servicemember who is court-martialed with legal counsel? Civillian lawyers with no experience with the UCMJ won't cut it with the heavy stuff these guys face, such as Haditha. Military lawyers don't need the funds these guys are offering.

I know this group likes to talk about how patriotic they are and all of that, but their stated aims just don't make much sense. Maybe I'm just overly paranoid, but I'd be cautious with this group.
